8. Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must when packing for Tulum – the sun is very strong here, and you don’t want to get burned! It’s water-resistant, has a light, non-greasy formula, and contains zinc oxide to protect your skin from the sun.

9. After-Sun Cream

There’s nothing worse than coming home from a dream vacation with a sunburn. Be sure to pack after-sun cream to soothe your skin in the Mexican sun after a day. We always opt for the Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Lotion. Sun Bum’s Aloe lotion is great for soothing and hydrating sunburn and it has a refreshing mint scent.

10. Flip-Flops

This is no surprise, but you will need flip-flops in Tulum. There are many places to walk around and explore; the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable. Pack a pair of flip-flops that you can easily slip on and off. We enjoy using the Sanuk Women’s Flip-Flop because they are comfortable and easy to carry around.

11. Beach Towels

You’ll want to pack a towel to dry off after a dip in the ocean or pool. A regular bath towel works fine but prefers a quick-drying microfiber towel. We like the Rainleaf Microfiber Towel. Tulum Packing Checklist For Clothing and shoes

1. Day Dresses/ Rompers

When packing for Tulum, bring light and airy dresses or rompers. Not only are they perfect for the hot weather, but they’ll also help you avoid getting sunburned. The last thing you want on your vacation is to be uncomfortable in clothing that’s too heavy or constricting.

2. Flowy Pants

Another great option for the tropical climate is flowy pants. They’re loose and breathable, making them perfect for exploring Tulum’s ancient ruins or going for a swim. Plus, they can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

3. Work Out Shorts/ Tanks

You can’t go to Tulum without packing a few workout shorts or tanks. They are great for working out and can also be worn as cover-ups when going from the beach to the bar. In addition, they’re perfect for layering when the weather gets cooler at night.

4. Bikini

Of course, no Tulum packing list would be complete without a bikini. Tulum is the perfect place to soak up the sun and show off your swimwear with its stunning beaches. Whether you prefer a bikini or one-piece, pack a few options, so you’re prepared for any occasion.

5. Button-Down Shirt

A lightweight button-down shirt is a must-have for any trip to Tulum and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Whether going out to dinner or exploring the ancient ruins, a button-down shirt will keep you cool and protected from the sun.

6. Dressy Sandals

You don’t need to bring many shoes on your trip to Tulum, but you will need at least one nice pair of sandals that can be dressed up or down. We recommend packing a pair of comfortable sandals to walk in and stylish enough to wear out to dinner. A pair of black or nude sandals are always a good choice.

7. A Pair of Sneakers

A lot of your time in Tulum will be spent outdoors exploring the ruins and the beach. Make sure you have comfortable sneakers that can handle all the walking!

8. Night Outfits/ Dress

Tulum is a great place to go out and enjoy the nightlife. From beach bars to nightclubs, there’s something for everyone. We recommend packing some light and airy dresses or tops that can be dressed up with heels or flats.

9. Shorts/ Jean Shorts

You know what they are. You live in them during summer. But there’s something about packing a pair of shorts or jean shorts for a trip that feels more… official. Plus, when it’s hot out, and you’re trying to enjoy yourself, the last thing you want to do is tug at your clothes all day. So pack a comfortable pair of shorts that you can move around in easily.

10. Underwear x5-7

This one is pretty self-explanatory. You’re going to need some underwear while you’re on vacation! We recommend packing at least five to seven pairs, depending on your trip length. And don’t forget to pack a few sports bras if you plan on working out or doing any activities that require a lot of movement.

11. Bras x 3

Just like with underwear, you’re going to need a few bras while you’re on vacation. We recommend packing at least three, one for each trip day. And make sure to pack a mix of regular and sports bras, depending on your plans.

12. Socks x 2

Tulum is a great place to hike or explore breathtaking ancient ruins like the famous Mayan ruins. And when doing any activity like that, you will want to have a comfortable pair of socks. We recommend packing at least two pairs, one for each trip day.

13. T-Shirts/Tank Tops

Unless you are going for a business trip or other formal event, Tulum is a very casual place. And if you are going there for the beaches, even more so! You will want to pack a variety of t-shirts and tank tops to keep you cool and comfortable in the sun and heat.

14. Bathing Suits

An essential for any trip to Tulum! With its beautiful beaches and turquoise water, you will want to pack at least two bathing suits. And if you plan on doing any water-sports or other activities that require a swim, make sure to pack a few extra.

15. Light Jacket/ Rain Jackets

Tulum can get cool at night, especially if you’re visiting during the winter months. Be sure to pack a light jacket or rain jacket that you can throw on when the temperature dips. Our recommendation is a denim jacket – it’s the perfect way to add a little bit of warmth without being too heavy or bulky.

16. Sundresses

Have you ever been somewhere so stunning that you can’t help but spend your days in a daze? Tulum is one of those places. The colors are vibrant, the air is warm and salty, and the sun seems to shine just a little brighter. Trust us; you will want to pack breezy dresses. Maxi dresses are also a great option – they’re comfortable, flattering, and can be dressed up or down. Just pack a few different options, so you’re prepared for anything!

Tulum Essentials For Toiletries

1. Body wash/soap

We all know how important it is to stay clean and refreshed on vacation, so don’t forget to pack your favorite body wash or soap. If you’re staying in a hotel, they will likely have these items available for you. However, if you’re staying in an Airbnb or hostel, you’ll need to bring your own.

2. Face wash

A must-have on any packing list, the face wash is essential for keeping your skin clean and refreshed while on vacation. We recommend packing a travel-sized bottle of face wash to save space in your suitcase.

3. Moisturizer

You’ll need to pack a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated in the heat. The sun can be harsh in Tulum, so ensure you apply sunscreen regularly and rehydrate your skin with lotion or cream. Aloe vera gel is also a good option to have on hand in case you get too much sun.

4. Tooth floss

You may wonder why tooth floss made it onto this list, but trust us – you’ll be glad you have it! There are plenty of opportunities to eat delicious (and often sugary) food while on vacation, and you’ll want to ensure your teeth are clean and healthy.

5. Makeup

Of course, you want to look your best while on vacation, but lugging your entire makeup collection with you is probably not the best idea. Stick to the basics like foundation, concealer, and mascara.

6. Deodorant

It would be best if you had deodorant because, to be honest, you’re going to be sweating in the hot sun. But don’t worry, plenty of great natural deodorants won’t harm the environment. Because of the tropical climate in Tulum, we recommend you use deodorants that come in stick form because they’re less likely to melt in the heat.

7. Hair products

Hair products are a vital part of your packing list, especially if you’re going somewhere with a tropical climate, like Tulum. Bring your favorite shampoo, conditioner, and styling products if you need them. A beach wave or saltwater spray can also help keep your hair looking good in the humidity. Sam typically brings leave in conditioner with her after she’s been in the saltwater.

8. Shampoo and conditioner

You’ll want to pack your favorite shampoo and conditioner to ensure your hair stays healthy and looks great while on vacation.

9. Toothpaste and toothbrush

How did these make a list? Well, it’s pretty simple. You need to brush your teeth every day, and it’s always good to have a travel-sized toothpaste and toothbrush on hand, so you’re not using the hotel’s mini toiletries. Plus, it’s just one less thing you have to remember to pack!

10. Facial Sheets

Tulum is an amazing place, but the tropical climate and humidity can be a little overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to it. We always go for any cruelty-free facial sheets because they help to keep our skin matte and oil-free.

11. Makeup removal wipes

A must-have on any packing list, makeup removal wipes are essential for taking off your makeup at the end of the day. We love the Pacifica Makeup Removal Wipes because they’re gentle on the skin and do a great job removing all traces of makeup.

12. Deet-Free Bug Repellent

When packing for a Tulum vacation, don’t forget to include eco-friendly bug repellent! The last thing you want is to be dealing with mosquito bites while trying to enjoy your vacation. We prefer the Ranger Ready Picaridin 20% Tick & Insect Repellent because it is effective and uses natural ingredients like lemon eucalyptus oil to keep bugs away.

13. Razor

Trust us; you don’t want to forget your razor on vacation. Nothing like getting to your hotel, airbnb, or hostel and realizing you need to go out and grab a razor. Just save yourself some time and don’t forget to pack a razor with extra blades, just in case!

14. Contacts, Contact solutions, or glasses

If you wear contacts or glasses, don’t forget to pack them! You’ll need them for all the activities that you have planned. Don’t forget to pack extra contact solution or glasses, just in case.

15. Makeup & Makeup bag

Whether you’re planning on spending your days lounging on the beach or exploring ancient ruins, you’ll want to pack a few essential items in your makeup bag. Sunscreen is a must, of course, but don’t forget lip balm, blotting papers, and insect repellent. For a night out, pack a small clutch with your favorite lipstick, eyeshadow, and mascara.

16. Face and Body Lotion

Face and body lotion are important to your skincare routine, whether at home or on vacation. The sun and saltwater at Tulum can be harsh on your skin, so it’s important to keep it hydrated. We recommend packing a light lotion for your face and a more heavy-duty one for your body.

17. Dry shampoo

If you’re the kind of person who loves to spend all day at the beach, then you will want to pack some dry shampoo. The last thing you want is greasy hair when trying to enjoy the sun and sand.

18. Hair Brush

While you may not be able to bring all of your normal hair products with you on vacation, a hairbrush is essential. The humidity in Tulum can be tough on your hair, so brushing it and tangle-free is key to having a good time.

19. Sunscreen Lip Balm

Your lips are just as susceptible to sunburn as the rest of your skin, so pack a lip balm with SPF. Aloe Vera. The Sun Bum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lip Balm is always our go-to. It is water-resistant, has UVA/UVB protection, and it’s also vegan and cruelty-free.

Tulum Essentials For Accessories

1. Adapter

Adding an adapter to your Tulum packing list is a must if you’re planning on using any electronic devices while you’re there. Mexico uses the same plugs as the US so you won’t need a converter. We recommend the Universal Travel Adapter. It is compatible with over 150 countries and has everything you need in one handy little device.

2. Portable Charger (Power Bank)

With so many things to do in Tulum, you will want to ensure your phone is always charged. Pack a portable charger (or power bank) to keep your phone charged while you’re on the go. This will come in handy when taking pictures, using maps, or staying connected with friends and family back home. We have been using the Anker Portable Charger for years, and it has never let us down.

3. Multi-Plug Outlet Extender

If you’re planning on doing any sort of work while you’re in Tulum (or if you just want to charge all of your devices at once), you will need a multi-plug outlet extender. We recommend the Anker 20W USB C Power Strip. It will come in handy when you’re in your hotel room or Airbnb, and there are not enough outlets to go around.

4. Unlocked phone

If you’re planning on using your phone while in Tulum, make sure it’s unlocked. This way, you’ll be able to buy a Mexican SIM card like Telcel and use data at a fraction of the cost. With an unlocked phone, you’ll also be able to use apps like WhatsApp and Google Maps without incurring international roaming charges. If you are not going to be in Tulum or Mexico for very long, just make sure your cellular carrier has a specific plan you can use while in Mexico or if Mexico coverage is included in your current plan. If you are going to be in Mexico for an extended period of time (several months) I recommend having an unlocked phone and using a Telcel SIM to save money.

5. Universal WIFI Router

Although most hotels in Tulum offer WIFI, it’s not always reliable. If you plan on working or staying connected while in Tulum, consider bringing a portable WIFI router. This way, you’ll be able to create your WIFI network wherever you go.

6. Packing Cubes

If you’re the kind who likes to travel light, packing cubes are a must-have. They help you organize your suitcase to maximize space and minimize wrinkles. We love the Eagle Creek Travel Gears because they come in various sizes and are durable.

Tulum Essential Packing List For Entertainment

1. Travel Speaker

Of course, you want to be able to enjoy the sounds of the waves while you’re relaxing on the beach, but sometimes you need a break from the natural noise. That’s when a portable speaker comes in handy. You can bring your favorite tunes wherever you go; they come in handy for group activities like beach parties or picnics. We’ve been using the Anker Soundcore for a few years now and it’s small, works well in the heat and holds a charge for a decent amount of time.

2. Earbuds/Headphones

We think it is completely necessary to travel with earbuds or headphones so you can listen to music on the flight, watch shows, listen to ebooks, or podcasts. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten my headphones and had to buy some in the airport.

3. Ear Plugs

If you’re a light sleeper, earplugs are a must. You never know when your neighbor might be blasting music or someone in the room above you might be stomping around. You should try the Loop Quiet Ear Plugs for Noise Reduction. They have a noise reduction rating of 33 decibels so you can sleep soundly through the night.

4. Books

If you are the type of person, who likes to read by the pool or on the beach, make sure to pack a few good books. Tulum is the perfect place to relax and escape daily life’s stresses, and there’s no better way to do that than by getting lost in a good book.

5. Kindle

If you prefer to read electronically, bring your Kindle or other e-readers. This way, you can access various books without having to lug around a physical book.

6. Journal

Tulum is a beautiful and inspiring place, and you may want to document your thoughts and experiences while you’re here. A journal is a perfect way to do that, and it’s also a great way to keep track of all the places you’ve been and things you’ve seen.

7. Laptop If Needed

Although we hope you take this opportunity to disconnect and unwind, we understand that some people need to stay connected for work or other reasons. If you need to bring your laptop, make sure it’s well-protected. We recommend the MOSISO Laptop Sleeve because it’s durable and has a built-in pocket for your charger and other accessories.

Tulum Essential Packing List For Footwear

1. Shoes

Shoes are an important part of your Tulum packing list. While you might be tempted to pack only flip-flops or sandals, it’s also a good idea to bring a pair of shoes. You’ll need them for exploring the town and for any tours or activities you might want to do.

2. Sandals

You may wonder why you need to pack sandals if you’re going to the beach, but trust us, you’ll be glad you have them! The sand can get hot, and there are plenty of places to explore in Tulum that require closed-toe shoes. We recommend the TEVA Women’s Original Sandal because they’re comfortable and easy to pack.

3. Flip-flops

We all know how important it is to pack the right shoes when we go on vacation, which includes a good pair of flip-flops. You’ll want to bring a comfortable pair to walk in since you’ll be doing a lot of walking around Tulum. But you’ll also want to ensure they’re stylish enough to wear out to the beach or a bar.

4. Slippers

If you have room in your bag don’t forget to bring a pair of slippers for when you’re relaxing in your room or by the pool. You want something comfortable that you can slip on and off easily. This is one of those “nice to have ” items.

5. Sneakers

Do you want to explore the ancient ruins in Tulum? You’ll need a good pair of sneakers while exploring the archaeological site or going on a nature hike. Make sure to pack a

light weight comfortable pair that’s easy to pack.

6. Casual Shoe

When I think of a casual shoe I think of something that can be dressed up or dressed down. This might be a loafer for some or Vans for others. It is really just your preference but I recommend bringing at least one stylish shoe to pack for your trip. A few options I might bring are Sanuk Lace or Vans. If I’m really feeling myself I’ll bring my Frye loafers or Frye slip-ons. We recommend packing a neutral color that will go with everything in your wardrobe.

Your Passport & Passport Holder

This is a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many people forget to pack their passports when traveling overseas. Make sure you have your passport and a passport holder like the Herschel Supply Co. to keep it safe while you’re on the go. The last thing you want is to lose your passport or have it stolen while you’re in another country. And while you’re at it, make copies of your passport, just in case you lose your passport while in Mexico.

Credit Cards & ATM Cards

Be sure to pack at least one credit card and one ATM card so you can access cash when you need it. It’s always a good idea to have cash on hand in emergencies, so bring enough to cover any potential expenses.

Driver’s License

If you’re planning on using a rental car in Mexico, you’ll need to bring your driver’s license. Even if you don’t plan on renting a car, it’s always a good idea to have your driver’s license while traveling abroad. You never know when you might need it!

Telcel Prepaid Mexico SIM Card

One of the most important things you’ll need for your trip to Tulum is a Mexican SIM card with data so you can stay connected. We recommend the Telcel Mexico Prepaid SIM Card because they have the best coverage in Mexico. It’s cheaper to pick one up once you are in Mexico. You can grab it at the airport or any Oxxo or 7-11.

Reusable Water Bottle

We usually don’t think about water’s importance until we’re thirsty. And when you’re traveling, staying hydrated is even more important. The best way to do this is to bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up whenever possible. We recommend the Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Reusable Water Bottle because it’s lightweight and perfect for the on-the-go.

SteriPen (If you don’t want to keep buying bottled water)

If you don’t want to keep buying bottled water, we recommend packing a SteriPen. It’s a portable water purifier that uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses. We love it because it’s easy to use and a great way to save money.

Hangover Meds (Liquid IV – this stuff is a lifesaver)

After a night of drinking, you’ll need some hangover meds to get you through the next day. We recommend Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier because it’s easy to take and works. Just mix it with water and drink it down. You’ll be feeling better in no time. We also just travel with Liquid I.V because we tend to get dehydrated while traveling so having it handy is super helpful!

Medications & Medication Organizer

If you take any medications, pack them in your carry-on bag. And suppose you have a lot of different medications. In that case, we recommend packing them in a medication organizer like the Weekly Pill Organizer. This way, you can keep all your medications organized and easily accessible. Some popular medications include:

Travel Towel

A travel towel is one of those things you didn’t know you needed until you had one. They’re lightweight and quick-drying, which makes them perfect for traveling. We recommend the Rainleaf Microfiber Towel Towel because it’s small enough to fit in your carry-on bag but large enough to be useful.

Easy Snack for Travel

No trip is complete without at least one travel day, and no travel day is complete without snacks. The ONE Protein Bars are always our go-to snack because they’re easy to eat on the go and taste great. I would avoid traveling around with protein bars/snacks that have a lot of chocolate because the heat will just melt it.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is always a good idea, regardless of where you’re traveling. But it’s especially important to have one when you’re in a foreign country in case of emergencies. Be sure to pack bandages, antibacterial ointment, pain relievers, and anything else you might need. The Mini First Aid Kit is our favorite because it’s small and lightweight but has everything you need.

Travel Insurance

No one likes to think about what could go wrong on their trip, but it’s always a good idea to have travel insurance just in case. Travel insurance will cover you if you have to cancel your trip due to illness, injury, or other unforeseen circumstances. Our favorite travel insurance has always been Safetywing because they’re affordable and have great coverage.

What not to pack for Tulum

You might think you need to pack a lot for your trip to Tulum, but in reality, you can get by with packing light. While there are some essential items you’ll need to bring (like sunscreen and swimwear), you can also leave some things at home. To help you plan what to pack for your trip, here’s a list of things you don’t need to bring to Tulum:

  • Heavy winter clothes – Tulum is a tropical destination so you won’t need any heavy winter clothing. Leave your coat and boots at home!
  • Formal attire – There’s no need to pack anything too fancy for Tulum. Casual clothing is perfectly acceptable and, in many cases, preferred.
  • A lot of money – You won’t need to bring a lot of cash to Tulum. Many establishments accept credit cards, and ATMs are available if you need cash.
  • Expensive jewelry – Tulum is a laid-back destination, so leave your expensive jewelry at home. You probably won’t need it, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What not to wear in Tulum

Like many tropical destinations, there are certain items of clothing that you should avoid wearing in Tulum. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Revealing clothing – Tulum is a relatively relaxed destination, but that doesn’t mean you should walk around in your bikini. Be respectful of the local culture and dress modestly.
  • Clothing with offensive language or images – Again, be respectful of the local culture and don’t wear clothing that could be offensive. This includes clothing with profanity or explicit images.
  • Uncomfortable shoes – You’re going to want to pack comfortable shoes that you can walk in. Tulum is a relatively small town, but many cobblestone streets still exist. Leave your high heels at home!

What shoes to wear to Tulum ruins

One of the main attractions in Tulum is the ruins. If you’re planning on visiting, be sure to pack comfortable shoes that you can walk in. The ruins are located on a cliff, so a lot of walking is involved. We recommend packing sneakers or other comfortable shoes.

What to wear in Tulum at night

When the sun goes down, the temperature in Tulum drops significantly. We recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket to layer over your outfit. You might also want to pack long pants or a skirt to keep warm. Remember to pack comfortable shoes as well!

Safety Tips

Tulum is a relatively safe destination, but there are still a few safety concerns. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while in Tulum:
